Britannica

1951-1953

4 May 2012 – 24 June 2012
Selfridges, London

Part of The British Big Bang, celebrating the Queen’s coronation, this exhibition was conceived exclusively for Selfridges, as a homage to some of the most desirable styles worn by the Queen’s contemporaries between 1951 and 1953, recreating key looks from this period.

Milliner Stephen Jones, the exhibition’s main contributor, created a collection of outstanding hats exclusively for Britannica 1951-1953.

The inspiration for the exhibition, particularly the signature pink, was drawn from three issues of British Vogue published each February between 1951 and 1953. The ‘Britannica’ issues of Vogue sought to celebrate Britishness in the aftermath of the war and the advent of the new Queen, Elizabeth II.
